WIQD’s Head of Programmes Wins Quantum Flagship EDI Award

Another award for our Head of Programmes Judith Kreukels!

During the European Quantum Technology Conference this week, Judith was honoured with the EDI Prize for her work with WIQD as a “champion of action towards Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in her institution”. This recognition highlights Judith’s work in fostering inclusivity, empowering underrepresented groups, and advancing equity in the quantum technology sector.

Transforming WIQD into a Driving Force for EDI

In 2021, Judith joined WIQD as its first-ever staff member, working only seven hours a week as a Project Manager. Her task was to transform WIQD from a volunteer-driven network into a structured organization with a clear focus on supporting all underrepresented groups in quantum development.

Now, just three years later, WIQD has grown beyond what we could have imagined:

The Personal Commitment to EDI

As Judith shared during the award ceremony, this work is deeply personal to us. After every event, participants express how much it means to them to be seen, heard, and valued. These moments are a powerful reminder of why this work matters:

“Everyone deserves to feel they belong and is valued for their expertise. To the ones here who may feel like a ‘diversity hire’: don’t believe that. You are hired for your expertise, and together, we’re fixing the system to finally give everyone a chance.”

Why EDI Matters in Quantum Development

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are not just about fairness, they are crucial for driving innovation in science. Creating respectful and inclusive environments unlocks the full potential of diverse teams, leading to more innovation.

Our Head of Programmes emphasized this during her speech:

“Equity, diversity, and inclusion are not just the responsibility of underrepresented groups or initiatives like WIQD—they are essential for everyone to work on.”

A Shared Achievement

This award is not just a recognition of individual efforts but a testament to what the WIQD community has achieved together. To the founders, committees, and volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy:

“This is for you. Thank you for your dedication. Together, we’re showing that equity, diversity, and inclusion aren’t just ideals—they’re what really drive change.”

Expanding the WIQD Mission

WIQD is eager to collaborate with organizations that share our vision of a more equitable quantum sector. By working together, we can continue to expand our impact and create opportunities for all.

Thank you so much for this incredible honour and for recognising Women in Quantum Development’s work in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the quantum field.

In 2021, I joined Women in Quantum Development—or WIQD—as its very first staff member, working just 7 hours a week. It was my role as Project Manager to help transform WIQD from a volunteer-driven network for women and non-binary people in quantum into a structured organisation with a clear mission for all underrepresented groups in quantum.

Now, three years later, we have grown beyond what we could have imagined. What started with monthly inspirational talks with role models has evolved into annual symposiums that bring together over 100 participants. We have established a network of over 1,500 individuals across the Netherlands and beyond. We have raised awareness on topics like neurodiversity and intersectionality and launched a mentorship programme.

This work is deeply personal to me. After every event, people share how much it means to be in a space where they feel seen and understood. These moments remind me why this work matters: everyone deserves to feel they belong and is valued for their expertise. To the ones here who may feel like a “diversity hire”: don’t believe that. You are hired for your expertise, and together, we’re fixing the system to finally give everyone a chance.

EDI isn’t just about fairness; it drives stronger, more innovative science. When we create environments where everyone feels respected, we unlock the full potential of individuals and teams. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are not just the responsibility of underrepresented groups, and initiatives like WIQD alone, they are essential for everyone to work on.

Looking ahead, WIQD is eager to collaborate with organisations to expand our impact even further. Reach out if you would like to work together. If you are interested in that, send us a message or scan the QR code on the slide.

And last but not least, this prize is not just about recognising my efforts—it’s about what we’ve achieved together. To our founders, committees, and volunteers: this is for you. Thank you for your dedication. Together, we’re showing that equity, diversity, and inclusion aren’t just ideals—they’re what really drive change.

Together, we can create a quantum sector that’s not just innovative but equitable for all.
