Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in STEM | Building a Supportive Workplace Culture
Did you know that 28% of LGBT+ people and 20% of trans people have at some point considered leaving their jobs because of a hostile workplace or discrimination? (rcs.org) Or that gay and bisexual students are less likely to follow an academic career? (rcs.rog)
Today, on the International Day of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM, we raise awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ professionals and students in STEM fields. On this day, we call for more inclusive workplaces in STEM. Inclusive workplaces encourage innovation, creativity, and productivity, allowing everybody to thrive. Creating a supportive and respectful environment for LGBTQIA+ professionals builds a culture of innovation and shows the value of diversity in STEM.
In this blog, we reflect on why (LGBTQIA+) inclusion matters and offer practical ways to build an LGBTQIA+- inclusive environment.
Why LGBTQIA+ Inclusion Matters in STEM and Beyond
For LGBTQIA+ individuals, finding a sense of belonging at work can be challenging, especially in underrepresented fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Not only does an inclusive environment help LGBTQIA+ individuals feel more comfortable being themselves at work, but research also shows that inclusive workplaces lead to more productivity and innovation (Harvard Business Review, 2019). So how can we make sure that our workplaces are inclusive?
Practical Ways to Build an LGBTQIA+-Inclusive Workplace
While having policies to protect LGBTQIA+ rights is essential, there are many practical ways to create an inclusive workplace culture right now. Here’s how companies can build a supportive workplace for LGBTQIA+ professionals:
- Educate Yourself
Understanding the unique challenges LGBTQIA+ individuals face in the workplace is vital. Educating yourself on LGBTQIA+ issues helps create empathy and trust within teams (Deloitte, 2018). Encourage self-education as part of your company’s DEI goals. - Use Inclusive, Gender-Neutral Language
Language plays a crucial role in inclusion. Start by replacing gendered language like “Hi guys” with “Hi everyone” or “Hi folks.” Tools like Slackbots can also prompt employees to use gender-neutral language, which reinforces inclusivity and respect. - Respect Pronouns and Preferred Names
Asking for pronouns and preferred names in meetings and email signatures takes the pressure off LGBTQIA+ employees who often have to assert themselves. Normalizing pronoun-sharing is a small but powerful action towards creating a welcoming environment. - Champion Inclusivity Actively
Allyship is a core part of building LGBTQIA+ inclusion. If you notice misgendering or deadnaming of LGBTQIA+ team members, step in to correct it respectfully. This kind of active support helps build trust and takes pressure off those affect. - Offer Comfort in Virtual Meetings
Virtual meetings provide a window into personal spaces, which can be uncomfortable for employees who are not out at work. Providing virtual backgrounds or encouraging camera-off options can help LGBTQIA+ team members feel more comfortable. - Encourage Allyship Across Your Organization
Educate non-LGBTQIA+ employees on allyship. Sharing resources and articles on LGBTQIA+ topics helps build understanding and support throughout the organization, which fosters inclusivity. - Celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride
Observing LGBTQIA+ Pride as an organization promotes awareness and appreciation for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Encouraging team participation in Pride activities is an impactful way to show support. - Show Meaningful Support Beyond the Workplace
Supporting LGBTQIA+ rights goes beyond office walls. Attend rallies, sign petitions, or donate to LGBTQIA+-focused organizations to show your commitment to inclusivity.

Building a Brighter, More Inclusive Future
Today we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ individuals who drive innovation in STEM and quantum development. Building an LGBTQIA+ inclusive workplace isn’t a one-time initiative; it’s a continuous journey that requires empathy, allyship, and commitment from everyone involved.
Together, we can advocate for equal opportunities and contribute to a brighter, more inclusive (quantum) future. Happy International Day of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM!
