Innovating DEI Data Collection: Highlights from Our Women’s Day Hackathon

This International Women’s Day, we took matters into our own hands and celebrated by organizing a Women’s Day Hackathon! Our goal was to contribute to the quantum community by exploring innovative ways to collect and communicate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) data. We’re happy to share that the event was a success!

Participants from various fields and career stages came together to collaborate and develop new solutions. Over the course of the hackathon, five unique projects were created, each tackling the challenge of DEI data collection and communication in a creative way:

1) Most Impactful Use of Data: Survey UX Brainstorming

This team reimagined survey experiences through gamification. Their approach allowed participants to answer questions based on their available time and through open-ended questions and examples, making the process more engaging. Additionally, real-time results were displayed, showing participants how others had responded up to that point.

2) Most Creative Use of Data: WIQD Chatbot

Meet Qora, a chatbot designed to gamify DEI data collection. Qora leads users through an interactive journey, prompting them to reflect on feelings of inclusion and trends and attitudes in the workplace. This innovative approach makes gathering data fun.

3) Most Inventive Use of Data: Through Your Eyes

This web application provides a unique, data-driven perspective on lived experiences. Users make choices throughout a simulated journey, with outcomes influenced by real life DEI statistics. For instance, selecting a female profile might reveal a 70% chance of progressing to the next career stage, offering a tangible representation of systemic barriers.

4) How to Feel More Empowered to Share Stories

Recognizing the power of storytelling, this team proposed regular meetings and organized interest groups to facilitate open discussions. By sharing experiences, individuals can support and uplift one another, creating a more inclusive environment.

5) Toolkit on How to Be Your Own Advocate

This team developed a toolkit for workplaces, equipping individuals with resources on advocacy. The toolkit also highlights how organizations like WIQD can provide support in fostering a more inclusive quantum community.

A big thank you to all our participants for their enthusiasm and dedication, to Qblox for generously hosting us in their office, and to our fantastic Organizing Committee for making this event possible.

Together, we’re shaping a more inclusive quantum future!
